RESULTS
CHAPEL HILL, N.C.—Day one of the ACC Outdoor Track and Field Championships has finished and the Orange already earned its first-ever ACC Individual Champion with Martin Hehir winning the 10,000-meter run in personal record time on Thursday evening at North Carolina's Belk Track.
The Syracuse men's team holds second place overall with 21 points while the women's team is in sixth place with nine points.
Hehir finished the race in 29:10.12, trailing NC State's Andrew Colley, who owned the lead for most of the second half of the race, until the final lap where he was able to best Colley, who beat him out for the individual cross country title in the fall.
Reed Kamyszek finished in fourth place in the same race with a time of 29:31.93 to score points for Syracuse while Dan Lennon took 6th, Kevyn Hoyos finished in 15th and Andrew Palmer rounded out the SU group in 18th place.
Margo Malone also had an impressive performance for the Orange, taking third place in the women's 10,000-meter run in 33:15.02. This was the first time in her career she competed in the 10,000-meter run, finishing behind two runners that bested the meet record. Just behind Malone was Sarah Pagano, who ran a personal best time of 33:42.14 for a sixth place finish.
Reggie Morton finished in sixth place in the men's long jump, leaping a career-long 7.26 meters which is 0.25 farther than his previous best jump.
No Orange qualified for the finals in the preliminary rounds held on Thursday evening though three were very close to the qualifying mark. Andrew Bennison ran the 10th best time in the men's 1,500-meter run, which was faster than three of the qualifiers but did not advance due to the qualifying rules. The top two finishers from each heat plus the next four fastest runners move on to the finals. He ran a personal record time of 3:49.33 which was just four-hundredths of a second behind the last qualifying runner.
Sydney Leiher missed the finals by two-tenths of a second in the women's 1,500-meter run, finishing with a time of 4:26.98. Jaquan Holland was just one-hundredth of a second behind the last qualifier in the men's 200-meter dash, finishing with a time of 21.38 seconds.
Syracuse continues competition tomorrow, beginning with the men's 110-meter hurdles at 5:10 p.m.
