SYRACUSE, N.Y. - The No. 69 Syracuse tennis team fell to No. 24 Notre Dame Fighting Irish with a 4-3 setback at Drumlins in its final regular season home game.
Despite the loss, the Orange (5-14, 5-9 ACC) put up a good fight after losing the doubles point and dropping five-of-six of the first sets in singles competition. SU lost only its 10th home match since the beginning of the 2007 season, with three of those this season all coming to top-25 teams, and is now 56-10 at Drumlins in the past eight years. Notre Dame (14-9, 8-6 ACC) has won seven straight to end the season.
After a loss on court two in doubles action, Syracuse's newly-ranked No. 72 duo of senior Maddie Kobelt and freshman Valeria Salazar posted their second huge upset in as many weeks, defeating No. 10 Quinn Gleason and Britney Sanders 8-6 to even the score. The pair also knocked off the 12th-ranked doubles team from Clemson last weekend.
Notre Dame was able to secure the doubles point with an 8-6 on court three.
The Fighting Irish carried that momentum over to individual play, winning three of the first four singles matches to clinch the contest, including a 6-2, 6-1 win on court two by No. 37 Gleason over junior Amanda Rodgers. Syracuse's win during that span came from Salazar, 7-6, 6-1 at fourth singles for her second win of the day and fourth of the weekend.
With the outcome already decided, freshmen Rhiann Newborn and Maria Avgerinos
fought back to win the last two matches on courts three and five, respectively. Newborn pulled out a 3-6, 6-1, 6-4 victory over Jennifer Kellner while Avgerinos defeated Mary Closs, 4-6, 7-6, 6-4.
Before the match, Kobelt, along with senior Aleah Marrow were both honored for their four years of hard work and dedication to the Orange tennis program.
Syracuse now awaits its seeding for the Atlantic Coast Conference, which will take place in Cary, N.C. from Wednesday, April 23 through Sunday, April 27.
