JACKSONVILLE, Fla.—Three Orange have already qualified for the NCAA Championships after the first day of the NCAA East Preliminary Meet. Of the nine Syracuse student-athletes that competed on Thursday, three are guaranteed a trip to Eugene, Ore. for the national championship race and two have advanced to the quarterfinals of their events.
Martin Hehir had the best overall finish of any SU student-athlete, taking fourth place overall in the men's 10,000-meter run with a time of 29:52.49. Sarah Pagano and Margo Malone also qualified in the 10,000-meter, finishing in seventh and eighth place, respectively, with just six hundredths of a second separating them. Pagano finished in 33:55.50 and Margo Malone crossed the line in 33:55.56.
In the first race of the night, Joel Hubbard won his heat in the men's 1,500-meter run to qualify for the quarterfinal round, set to be held on Saturday at 6:30 p.m. He finished 20th overall with a time of 3:49.17.
Shaina Harrison also advanced to the quarterfinals of her event, taking 24th overall in the women's 100-meter dash with a time of 11.81 seconds. Harrison will compete again on Friday at 6:45 p.m. to qualify for the NCAA Championships.
Dan Lennon also competed in the men's 10,000-meter run, finishing in 16th place overall with a time of 30:20.04, less than 15 seconds slower than the last qualifier. Reed Kamyszek finished in 26th overall in the event in 30:42.41.
Rebecca Robinson competed in the 400-meter dash but her 29th place finish in 53.87 seconds was not fast enough to advance to the next round of competition. Molly Malone also ended her season on Thursday, finishing 40th overall in the 1,500-meter run with a time of 4:28.12.
Competition continues on Friday beginning with the 110-meter hurdles at 5 p.m. Seven Orange will hit the track for the second day of the East Prelims, four having the chance to qualify for the NCAA Championships on June 11-14.
