SU star attackman one of two Division I lacrosse players on second team
YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. – Syracuse attackman Kevin Rice became the fourth Orange men's lacrosse student-athlete to earn national academic All-America honors on Thursday, June 5 when he was selected to the 2014 Capital One Academic All-America Men's At-Large Second Team.
 Â
Overall, Rice was one of four Division I men's lacrosse players to earn academic All-America status this year. He and Loyola defenseman Joe Fletcher received the highest honors of the four by being picked to the second team. Duke's Jordan Wolf and Villanova's John LoCascio made the third team.
Â
Rice joins Greg Rommel (2007 third team), Mike Leveille (2008 first team) and John Galloway (2010, 2011 second team) as the only men's lacrosse players in Syracuse history to make a national academic All-America team.
Â
Rice started all 16 games for the Orange in 2014 and led the team in points (80) and assists (44). An All-ACC selection and Tewaaraton Award nominee as the nation's top player, Rice tallied at least one point in every game and recorded six games of at least seven points. In the season opener against Siena, Rice passed out eight assists, one short of the Orange single-game record. He also set the ACC Championship tournament records for points (15) and assists (11) versus Duke and Notre Dame.
Â
Off the field, Rice is pursuing a degree in history. He's been named to the SU Athletic Director's Honor Roll (min. 3.0 GPA) every semester he's been on campus. In 2013, Rice won the NCAA's Elite 89 Award for maintaining the highest GPA of any student-athlete among the four national semifinalists (Syracuse, Cornell, Duke, Denver).
Â
The Capital One Academic All-America program is administered by CoSIDA. To be eligible student-athletes must be a starter or key reserve, achieve sophomore standing at their current school, maintain a cumulative grade-point average of at least 3.3 and be nominated by his or her sports information director.
Â
Participants in fencing, golf, gymnastics, ice hockey, lacrosse, rifle, skiing, swimming, tennis, volleyball, water polo and wrestling are eligible for the men's at-large program.
