Melina Violas of volleyball and Riley Dixon of football are this week’s Scholar-Athletes of the Week
This week, Melina Violas of volleyball and Riley Dixon of football are Scholar-Athletes of the Week for their academic and athletic accomplishments.
Violas and the volleyball team enter their final week of non-conference play as they host Albany, Colgate and Cornell in the Otto Invitational. Saturday the Orange faces Albany at 5 PM and return for a 12:30 PM game against Colgate and a 6:30 PM contest against Cornell on Sunday.
The senior is Coach Yelin's go-to libero as she has recorded 98 digs and 30 assists so far this season. This past weekend she tallied a season best 20 digs to go along with five assists.
On Saturday, Riley Dixon and the 2-0 football team return to the Carrier Dome for a matchup with Maryland at 12:30 PM. The Terps are 2-1 on the season, coming off a 40-37 loss to West Virginia this past Saturday. This season he's had to punt the ball just eight times and has averaged 41.9 yards per attempt.
Dixon was his team's savior in the season opener against Villanova. The senior Ray Guy Award nominee threw the game winning touchdown pass on a fake field goal attempt in second overtime to win the game. Later he was honored for his performance, earning ACC Co-Specialist of the Week.
