Orange defenders have earned All-America honors three times under Thorpe's guidance.
SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Syracuse women's lacrosse head coach Gary Gait has announced that Regy Thorpe has been promoted to associate head coach. Thorpe is entering his sixth season as a member of Gait's staff.
Â
During his time at Syracuse, Thorpe has coached the Orange's defensive unit. Last season the Syracuse held its opponents to less than 10 goals in 14 of 24 games, and Kasey Mock earned IWLCA All-America and All-ACC Second Team honors. In 2013, Thorpe mentored Becca Block, who became the first player in school history to earn the IWLCA Defender of the Year award. She was also the BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Year and a first-team All-America selection.
Â
Overall, Syracuse defenders have earned 10 all-conference, five all-region and three all-America accolades since 2010. As a team, the Orange has advanced to the national semifinals four times in the last five years and has made two appearances in the national championship game.
Â
"Regy's vast experience makes him well deserving of his new position," Gait said. "He's done a great job for Syracuse women's lacrosse and will play an important role with the program as we strive for our first national championship."
Â
The Orange travels to Florida this weekend to take Team USA on Saturday, Jan. 17. Syracuse officially opens the season on Saturday, Feb. 7 when it faces Denver at noon and Canisius at 7:30 p.m. in the Carrier Dome.
