SYRACUSE, N.Y.- The Syracuse women's soccer team scored in the first minute of play and never looked back, defeating NC State in Atlantic Coast Conference play on Sunday afternoon by a final score of 3-0 on Pink Day at the SU Soccer Stadium.
Syracuse (5-10-1, 1-6 ACC) snapped a six-game skid and a three-game scoring drought in the rout of North Carolina State (4-11-0, 0-6 ACC). Sophomore Eva Gordon led the offensive charge with a goal and assist in the win. Gordon helped the Orange score in the first minute of play, blasting a shot towards the net that was finished on a diving effort from junior Emma Firenze.
"We asked our team to come out strong from the start and we scored in the first minute of the game," head coach Phil Wheddon said. "You can't ask for a better start than that and I thought we were more dynamic on attack and created some good opportunities."
The Orange outshot the Wolfpack 14-4 in the contest, including an 8-3 edge in shots on target. Sophomore goalkeeper Courtney Brosnan came away with the clean sheet, tallying three saves in net. Syracuse dominated play from start to finish to pick up its first conference win of the season.
It took only 50 seconds to get the scoring going as Firenze opened the game up with a goal to give the Orange a 1-0 advantage. Junior Stephanie Skilton put Syracuse up by two in the 21st minute after accepting a cross from sophomore Maddi Iozzi, blasting a shot past Wolfpack goalkeeper Sydney Wooten. Skilton's goal gave the Orange a two-goal lead headed into halftime.
The Orange replicated its first half start with another quick start in the second half, finding the back of the net in the 47th minute. After a shot ripped from sophomore Alex Lamontagne, Gordon finished the rebound to put Syracuse up by three. The Wolfpack thought they had a goal later in the match, but it was called off due to goalie interference. Syracuse cruised to a 3-0 win.
Syracuse will continue its schedule at home on Thursday when the team takes on Miami in ACC play at 8 p.m. Both live stats and live video and can be accessed via Cuse.com.
