SYRACUSE, N.Y.- After an equalizer by senior Jackie Firenze in the 85th minute, sophomore Alex Lamontagne lifted the Syracuse women's soccer team over Miami in ACC play with a golden goal in double overtime, sending the Orange past the Hurricanes by a final score of 2-1 at the SU Soccer Stadium.
The win for Syracuse (6-10-1, 2-6-0 ACC) was its second consecutive ACC win and first overtime victory of the season. Miami (4-10-0, 2-6-0 ACC) struck first in the 58th minute, but the Orange battled back to come away with its first come-from-behind win of the season.
Trailing 1-0 with only five minutes left to play, Firenze tied the game up with a goal off a beautifully-placed cross from sophomore Eva Gordon, sending the game into overtime. After a scoreless first overtime frame, Lamontagne came through with the heroics in the 101st minute, collecting a pass from junior Stephanie Skilton, beating Miami goalkeeper Catalina Perez for the game winner.
"I thought we did some very good things on the attacking side tonight," head coach Phil Wheddon said. "Early in the game, we got behind them, but the team played with passion and heart. I am really proud of their effort throughout the whole game."
The Orange outshot the Hurricanes 14-11 in the contest, including an 8-4 edge with shots on target. Syracuse also had seven corner kicks compared to five off the foot of Miami.
Sophomore goalkeeper Courtney Brosnan registered three vital saves in net, including a sensational diving kick save in the first half. For Miami, Perez also had a stellar performance, securing six saves and a few diving efforts that were big for the Hurricanes.
Erin McGovern scored the lone Miami goal, coming in the 58th minute off a corner kick. Despite trailing by a goal for majority of the second half, the Orange was able to keep consistency on the attacking half until finally breaking through.
Syracuse will stay at home for its next contest when the team takes on Wake Forest on Sunday at 1 p.m. Both live video and live stats can be accessed via Cuse.com.
