SOUTH BEND, Ind.- Sophomore goalkeeper Courtney Brosnan turned in a strong performance in the goal, but the Syracuse women's soccer team was not able to generate many scoring chances against No. 16 Notre Dame on Thursday night, losing to the Irish 1-0 in ACC play.
Brosnan finished the game with five total saves for Syracuse (4-9-1, 0-5 ACC), giving up one Irish score that eventually held up to be enough. Notre Dame (9-3-1, 2-3 ACC) registered 18 total shots, utilizing a goal from Sandra Yu off a header in the 18th minute to come away with the win.
"I thought Courtney had a great, steady game. She made great saves look routine," head coach Phil Wheddon said. "Overall, I am really proud of our team. This is the fourth top-10 caliber team we've had to play in the past five games and I thought we fought and put in a real blue-collar performance."
Syracuse started off the game strong by applying pressure on the tough Irish defense, receiving two corner kicks in the first two minutes of play. Although the Orange came out strong, a Notre Dame counter attack eventually led to the only goal of the game in the 15th minute. Yu finished a beautifully placed header to the left corner of the goal, beating a diving effort from Brosnan.
The Orange backline battled Notre Dame all night, holding the Irish scoreless for the remainder of the contest. Although Brosnan and the Syracuse defense had a solid showing, the Orange was unable to produce offensively. Notre Dame goalkeeper Kaela Little came away with the clean sheet despite not tallying a save.
"Notre Dame has some exceptional players and we made them really work to defend their goal," Wheddon said. "Defensively, we made it tough and limited them to some long-range shots. I feel like this is a turning point and that we can build off this headed into our game on Sunday."
Syracuse will stay on the road for its next game when the team takes on Pittsburgh on Sunday at 2 p.m. Both live video and live stats can be accessed via Cuse.com.
