PITTSBURGH, Pa.- The Syracuse women's soccer team took Pittsburgh into overtime on Sunday afternoon, but a penalty kick in the 99th minute won the game for the Panthers, beating the Orange by a final score of 1-0 in Atlantic Coast Conference play.
Sophomore goalkeeper Courtney Brosnan made seven pivotal saves for Syracuse (4-10-1, 0-6 ACC) in net, but a decisive penalty inside the Orange box in overtime was the difference. Despite Brosnan diving to the correct direction on the shot, Hanna Hannesdottir finished for the golden goal, delivering Pittsburgh (10-3-1, 4-2 ACC) the win.
"We had our opportunities to win the game, but we just couldn't finish," head coach Phil Wheddon said. "This was our seventh one nil loss of the season, which shows we are competitive and not far off. Today came down to an unfortunate challenge inside the box and it was a tough way to lose a game."
The Orange registered five shots throughout the game, including two shots on target. With time expiring on the clock at the end of the second half, sophomore Alex Lamontagne nearly picked the top of the net on a chip shot that would have won the game. Panthers' goalkeeper Taylor Francis was able to get her fingertips on the shot to keep the Orange scoreless.
Although Syracuse was outshot 13-5 in the contest, the Orange battled the Panthers throughout the entirety of the contest, matching the physicality of Pittsburgh.
The Panthers finished the game with eight total corner kickers compared to two from the Orange. Sophomore Eva Gordon led Syracuse with two total shots.
The Orange will return home and play its final four contests of the season at the SU Soccer Stadium, starting next Sunday, Oct. 18 against North Carolina State at noon. Both live video and live stats can be accessed via Cuse.com.
