Clemson scored a 23-13 victory against No. 17 Florida State on Nov. 8. The Tigers outscored the Seminoles 10-0 in the fourth quarter to earn a trip to the Atlantic Coast Conference title game. Sophomore quarterback Deshaun Watson registered 404 yards of total offense
STARS AND STRIPES DAY
The Orange will once again pay homage to our servicemen and women as Saturday is 'Stars and Stripes Day' at the Carrier Dome, presented by the Air National Guard. More than 300 soldiers from Fort Drum, a military post near Watertown, N.Y. and home of the U.S. Army's 10th Mountain Division, are expected to be in attendance and many of Saturday's in-game elements will recognize the contributions of the men and women in our armed forces.
An Air Force Delayed Entrance Program (DEP) Swear-In ceremony will be held on the field prior to kickoff. Seventeen local bands are expected to fill the stands to play patriotic songs throughout the game, and a "Hometown Hero" presentation is scheduled during the first quarter. They are just a few of the special recognitions that are planned.
In addition, Syracuse received special permission from the U.S Army to display the 10th Mountain Division patch on its jerseys. Typically patches of individual military units are only permitted to be worn by service academies, but with the help of Fort Drum and Michael Haynie, Syracuse University's Vice Chancellor for Veteran and Military Affairs, the Orange received approval.
DEFENSE INTO OFFENSE
In three of its first nine games, the Syracuse defense has been able to contribute points. SU currently leads the Atlantic Coast Conference and ranks 11th in the country with three defensive touchdowns this season.
Syracuse has had seven defensive touchdowns in its past 20 contests. In fact, SU has had four more defensive touchdowns the past two seasons than it had in Scott Shafer's first five years on the Orange coaching staff from 2009-13.
AGAINST THE BEST
Since the start of the Associated Press poll in 1936, the Orange has faced the AP's top-ranked team 10 times before and is 1-9 in those games.
On Sept. 29, 1984, Syracuse upset No. 1 Nebraska, 17-9, at the Carrier Dome for its only win against a team ranked No. 1. The victory ended Nebraska's 23-game, regular-season winning streak. SU assistant athletic director for player development Bob Brotzki started on the Orange offensive line versus the Cornhuskers.
Clemson is the fifth AP No. 1 to come to the Carrier Dome. In addition to previously mentioned Nebraska, the Orange hosted No. 1 Miami in 1992 and 2002 and No. 1 Florida State last season.
SCOUTING THE TIGERSÂ
Clemson enters Saturday's contest with a perfect 9-0 overall record and the Tigers have been the No. 1 team in the first two sets of College Football Playoff (CFP) rankings. Â
Sophomore quarterback Deshaun Watson has 2,726 yards of total offense this season. Watson has thrown for 2,233 yards and ranks second on the club with 494 rushing yards. Watson's favorite target is classmate Artavis Scott who currently ranks second in the ACC with 56 receptions.Â
The Tigers are fifth nationally in total defense, allowing 287.3 yards per game. Linebackers B.J. Goodson and Ben Boulware lead the team with 55 tackles apiece. Shaq Lawson is one of the nation's most disruptive defensive linemen. He has 16.5 tackles for loss and 6.5 sacks on the year.
THE CLEMSON SERIES
Syracuse and Clemson will meet for the fourth time on Saturday.Clemson owns a 2-1 edge in the all-time series, taking each of the last two meetings.
The Orange won the first pairing between the two programs in the 1996 Gator Bowl, defeating the Tigers, 41-0. Quarterback Donovan McNabb threw for 309 yards en route to game MVP honors. Wide receiver Marvin Harrison completed his Syracuse career with a seven-catch, 173-yard receiving performance that included two touchdowns.
