ROCHESTER, N.Y.- Backed by a three-point night from junior Jessica Sibley, the Syracuse women's ice hockey team dominated College Hockey America rival RIT on Wednesday night, defeating the Tigers by a final score of 5-1 at Gene Polisseni Center.
Â
Sibley scored two goals and dished out an assist for Syracuse (6-7-1, 4-1-1 CHA), leading the Orange to three big points in conference play. The Orange outshot RIT (3-11-0, 0-6-0 CHA) 42-33 in the contest, including a 23-13 edge in shots on net.
Â
"It was a huge three-point night by Jess Sibley. She finished with two goals and a helper to get us the big win," head coach Paul Flanagan said. "The more points that we can get this first semester, particularly playing on the road, is huge for us."
Â
In the win, senior Melissa Piacentini became the all-time points leader in Syracuse women's ice hockey history, moving past Holly Carrie-Mattimore '13 by totaling her 97th point on an assist in the second frame.
Â
Senior captain Nicole Ferrara got the scoring started midway through the first period, collecting a pass from sophomore Stephanie Grossi and burying it past de Jonge for the game's first goal. Ferrara's goal gave the Orange a 1-0 lead headed into the second period.
Â
Sibley extended the Syracuse lead to two at the 9:08 mark in the second, beating de Jonge in front of the crease. Nearly seven minutes later, Grossi put the Orange up 3-0 with some dangles, moving de Jonge off her line for an open net that was assisted by seniors Nicole Renault and Piacentini. Sibley added her second score on a power play with only five seconds left in the frame, giving the Orange a 4-0 lead headed into the final period.
Â
With a comfortable 4-0 lead going into the final period, freshman Allie Munroe added some additional insurance, scoring the first goal of her collegiate career by going top shelf to put Syracuse up by five. Despite a goal by RIT's Brooke Baker at the 10:34 mark in the third, the Orange held on for a 5-1 win to remain in first place in the CHA.
Â
Syracuse will stay on the road for its next contest when the team takes on local rival Colgate on Friday at 7 p.m. Both live video and live stats can be accessed via Cuse.com.
