SYRACUSE, N.Y.-Â The Syracuse women's ice hockey team returns to College Hockey America play this weekend when the Orange hosts Penn State for a pair of contests, starting on Friday, Dec. 4 at 7 p.m. at Tennity Ice Pavilion. The second game will be on Saturday at 3 p.m. at Tennity.
Syracuse (7-9-1, 4-1-1) is coming off a 5-2 win over No. 9 North Dakota in non-conference play. Sophomore Emily Costales netted two goals as junior Jessica Sibley contributed three points, including a goal and two assists. In the win, sophomore Abbey Miller picked up her first collegiate victory en route to earning CHA Goalie of the Week. The sophomore netminder led the Orange with 13 saves to go with an .867 save percentage in her first start of the season.
The Orange currently resides in second place in the CHA with nine points, which is only two points behind Mercyhurst. Penn State (4-9-3, 1-2-3 CHA) sits in fourth place with five points, looking for a big weekend against Syracuse to pull within the top of the standings.Â
Syracuse hopes to build off its 5-2 win over No. 9 North Dakota to propel them into this weekend.
"We are trying to string together some wins here, so I think coming off that win over North Dakota, our kids are confident and feeling good about themselves," head coach Paul Flanagan said. "We traditionally have really tough games going back and forth with Penn State. For us, we have to hit the ice running on Friday night."
SCOUTING PENN STATE
Penn State currently resides in fourth place in the CHA with a 1-2-3 conference record.
Amy Petersen is the Nittany Lions' leader in points with two goals and a team-high eight assists for 10 points. Laura Bowman leads the team with seven goals. Behind Petersen and Bowman, six players have four through seven points.
Celine Whitlinger has started and played in 11 games this season for Penn State. She has a 1.61 goals against average to go with a .946 save percentage. Whitlinger is 3-5-3 overall.
PSU is 4-9-3 this season and lost its last two games against St. Lawrence. The Nittany Lions are unbeaten in their last three CHA games, going 1-0-2.
