Syracuse can’t overcome a late comeback by Akron
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – In its final test of the weekend, Syracuse (4-6) falls to Akron (6-4) after a late comeback defeats the Orange, 4-3. Julie Wambold reached base in all three of her plate appearances with two base knocks and three runs batted in.
Â
Syracuse jumped on Akron right away with Maddi Doane setting the table with another double out of the leadoff spot. Sammy Fernandez immediately followed up with an infield single, advancing Doane to third. Wambold then cleared the bases with a triple down the right field line to give Syracuse its first two runs of the game.
Â
In the bottom of the first, Akron came through with two outs and a runner on, doubling off of Jocelyn Cater to bring in is first run of the game and cut Syracuse's lead to one.
Â
Both teams struggled to get anything going until Akron tagged Sydney O'Hara for three runs in the fifth after a pair of singles gave them a 3-2 lead and a single with two outs scored the deciding run, giving Akron a 4-2 advantage.
Â
Needing base runners, Fernandez was the catalyst for 'Cuse in the top of the sixth, singling to left center. The Zips refused to pitch to Corinne Ozanne, walking her to get to Wambold with runners on first and second, no outs in the inning. Wambold scored Fernandez from second on a single up the middle to cut Akron's lead to one, but one run was all the Orange could manufacture the rest of the way as Akron walked away the victor by a 4-3 score.
