Syracuse fell in both games despite posting a combined 13 runs
SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Pittsburgh (28-14) came out swinging to begin the three game series, defeating Syracuse (15-21) in both games of the doubleheader. The offense for the Orange continues to click as it has now scored six or more runs in its last three games.
The Highlights
'Cuse Falls In Heartbreaker To Start
Pittsburgh took advantage of a hit batter and a pair of walks in the first with a two-out double to left to take a 3-0 lead. The Orange was held off until the third when Wednesday's hero, Chitkowski, singled to center to score Ozanne from second and pull within two of the Panthers.
Pitt extended its lead by roping a pair of homers and taking advantage of an error to score four, two of which were unearned, in the fifth but Syracuse had a rebuttal in the bottom of the inning. With the bases loaded and one down in the inning, Burkhardt skied one to center field deep enough to score Kinsey from third. Dombrowski immediately followed with a three-run shot to center to score Dewes and O'Hara, and cut the deficit back to two with 7-5 score.
The Panthers' lead was soon cut to one in the ensuing inning when Dewes singled up the middle to score Doane from third. Syracuse allowed another unearned run in the seventh but it wouldn't matter as the Orange was held scoreless in the final frame, despite having the bases loaded for most of the inning, ultimately falling, 8-6.
The Highlights
'Cuse Can't Keep Up In Game Two
Pitt busted out 12 runs before Syracuse answered with a run of its own in the third. Ozanne singled up the middle to score Doane from third to get on the board. The Panthers then went off for another five runs in the fourth but was unable to keep the Orange quiet in the bottom of the inning as it scored two off of a single from Doane that scored Dewes and Dombrowski.
The Panthers scored another five in the fifth but once again, the Orange refused to go down quietly as it scored four of its own before the final out was recorded. Dombrowski just missed her second homer of the day, doubling off the center field wall to score O'Hara. Soon after, Dewes recorded her first home run of the season with a three-run four-bagger to straightaway center, scoring Dombrowski and Chitkowski. The offense's success in the fifth fell short of what it needed to keep its chances alive as Pittsburgh defeated Syracuse, 22-7.
