Freshman shines in track debut
After his record-breaking track debut, freshman Justyn Knight has been named ACC Track Performer of the Week.
It's the second time in three weeks a member of the Orange has earned the honor after Martin Hehir previously won the award this season.
Knight shattered a school record that stood since 1972 in the 1500-meters while winning the event at the Virginia Challenge. His time of 3:39.66 is the second-fastest in the nation so far this season and qualifies him for the NCAA East Regional.
After not competing during the indoor season, Knight's time in Virginia was the first time he set foot on the track for the Orange, following up a strong rookie cross country campaign. Knight was the top-rookie at the ACC Championships with an eighth place finish and also posted top-20 times at the highly-competitive Coast-to-Coast Battle in Beantown and Wisconsin Adidas Invitational.
The Vaughn, Ontario native also won gold at the Pan-Am games in cross country while competing for Team Canada and set the Canadian junior mile record (3:59.51) this winter for Toronto Track.
The track team continues its outdoor season at the Penn Relays, which begin on Wednesday, with members of the Orange also heading to the Drake Relays and Cornell this weekend.
