A Proper Send Off
Cater was perfect through the first three innings, allowing the offense to take control of the game. 'Cuse wasted no time scoring as Doane doubled to kick off the first and was soon scored on an RBI single by Ozanne to take a 1-0 lead after the opening inning. The Orange added another run in a hurry with a leadoff home run by Chitkowski in the second.
The third inning was all 'Cuse as the Orange began the inning with five-straight hits. O'Hara, Wambold and Chitkowski all singled to load the bases, setting up an RBI single by Burkhardt to take a 3-0 lead with the bases still loaded. Dombrowski stepped to the plate in the ensuing at-bat and absolutely crushed a ball over the center field wall for a grand slam to give Syracuse a comfortable 7-0 lead.
Virginia was held off in the fourth but managed to record a hit off of Cater, breaking up her no-hit bid. Syracuse bats stayed hot in the bottom of the inning as Chitkowski singled to begin the inning and Dewes soon homered to take a nine run lead and turn the lineup over. Doane, Fernandez and Ozanne did not disappoint with two down as a walk, a single and a hit by pitch loaded the bases for the Orange. O'Hara took advantage of the RBI opportunity with a single to score Doane and Fernandez to extend the lead to 11.
The Cavaliers took advantage of an error in the fifth by following up with a home run to cut Syracuse's lead to nine but the pair of runs was all they could manage as 'Cuse earned a 11-2 victory.
