The senior becomes the 19th member of the program selected since 2007
Irving, Texas – Sam Rodgers is the latest member of the Orange to be inducted into the National Football Foundation's Hampshire Honor Society, the NFF announced on Wednesday.
The Hampshire Honor Society Recognizes scholar-athletes as an expansion of the NFF's National Scholar-Athlete program, with Rodgers being the 19th member of the Orange recognized since the society began the program in 2007.
"We continue to raise the bar each year for the number of student-athletes who qualify for membership in the Hampshire Honor Society," said NFF President & CEO Steve Hatchell. "The Hampshire Honor Society plays an important role in highlighting that college football players clearly play a leadership role in the classroom as well as on the playing field. We congratulate each of these young men for their commitment to excellence."
Rodgers, who was a CoSIDA Capital One Academic All-America Team honoree and was selected to the AFCA Good Works Team this season in addition to a number of other accolades, was a team captain and served as the Orange long snapper for every game of his collegiate career.
At Wednesday's ninth-annual 'Cuse Awards, Rodgers was honored with the Soladay Award. Established in 1995 in honor of former Associate Athletic Director Doris R. Soladay, the award is considered the most prestigious honor given to a student-athlete by the Department of Athletics. It recognizes accomplishments in athletic competition, leadership and community engagement.
Rodgers is also a Remembrance Scholar for the 2014-15 academic year, which is one of the highest awards a Syracuse University student can receive. Each year, the University awards 35 Remembrance Scholarships to students based on academic achievement, citizenship and service to the community in honor of the 35 Syracuse students who perished in the Lockerbie bombing of Pan Am Flight 103 in 1988.
Rodgers also uses his education to aid in one of his many community service activities. As a nutrition major, he speaks with local middle school students about the importance of a healthy diet and eating habits.
In addition, he has made a pair of mission trips to Haiti in the last two years with the Poverty Resolutions organization. While there, he built greenhouses for the Mission of Grace orphanage to help create a reliable food source. He also taught the children English and ran a soccer clinic for more than 100 children from the surrounding village. He was able to provide soccer balls, shoes and cleats to many of the kids in attendance.
The State College, Pennsylvania native is also a founder and current president of the Syracuse chapter of Uplifting Athletes, a member of the national Uplifting Athletes organization that aligns college football with rare diseases and raises them to national priority through outreach, research and advocacy.
Rodgers organized the third-annual Lift for Life event this summer, which raises awareness and funds to combat brain tumors, a cause Rodgers and the chapter decided to take on after former Orange punter Rob Long was diagnosed with a brain tumor in 2010.
He and his teammates are also active with the Building Men program and the Ronald McDonald House.
Tickets for the 2015 season are available online, by phone (888-DOMETIX), at Destiny USA kiosks and at the Carrier Dome Box Office (Gate B). In addition, discounted group tickets (20+), with prices as low as $10 each, are available for all home games by calling the Ticket Sales office (443-3212).
