 The Highlights
Bats Come Alive Against The Golden Griffs
After a scoreless first, Wambold kicked things off in the second with a leadoff home run to get 'Cuse on the board with a 1-0 lead. The slim advantage didn't last long however as Chitkowski launched a bases loaded, grand slam to score Fernandez, Wambold and O'Hara and jump out to a 5-0 lead.
Â
The Orange wasn't done the next inning either as it added another three runs in the fourth. With Doane on second, Ozanne singled up the middle to score her on a close play at the plate. Soon after, with the bases juiced, Fernandez crossed the plate on a wild pitch and Burkhardt knocked in Kinsey on a fielder's choice to give Syracuse an 8-0 lead after four.
Â
Ozanne added one more in the fifth with a double to right-center, scoring Fernandez from first. In the bottom of the inning, Canisius fought to stay alive leading off with a triple and scoring on a wild pitch. Any attempt of a rally was soon thwarted by the 'Cuse defense as it nearly turned a double play, resulting in a fielder's choice and Cater struck out the ensuing batter.
Â
With two outs, the Golden Griffins were still fighting to stay alive. A single to right with runners on first and second looked as if it would score the second run for Canisius but a perfect throw by Doane gunned down the final out on a bang-bang play at the dish to give 'Cuse a 9-1 victory.
Â
Cater was throwing heat all game, shutting down the Griffs for the first four innings, allowing just one run in the five-inning game and striking out eight.
