Aliyah Wade and Alicia Hansen join an already promising freshman class
Softball Bolsters Roster With Local Talent
Head Coach Leigh Ross and her staff wasted no time after the 2015 seasons end to add some talent to its already promising 2015-16 freshman class. Local products, Aliyah Wade and Alicia Hansen will help Syracuse's four signees push the level of competition in the off-season workouts and practices right away.
Â
What They Bring To The Table
"We are very fortunate to have these two young ladies joining the 'Cuse softball program," said Coach Ross of the freshmen.
"They both have the potential to be immediate contributors to this team. Aliyah Wade has tremendous speed and will definitely help us in the outfield. Alicia Hansen is a strong middle infielder with great versatility. Both are great students with a love for the game and an eagerness to represent Syracuse University."
Â
Wade And Hansen On Joining The Home Team
"Syracuse has always been my dream school since I was 10 years old," said Wade. "I couldn't imagine going anywhere else. I know I will get the best possible education and I get to play collegiate softball in my hometown… Nothing beats that."
Â
"I've always wanted to play Division-I softball and Syracuse is a great program that I've been following since I was young," said Hansen. "I also wanted to stay close to home and Syracuse allows me to do that. I can't wait to be a part of the program."
Â
All-Everything
Hansen has been a threat at the plate in Central New York since her eighth grade season in which she posted a .471 batting average, 21 runs batted in and 24 runs scored. Since, the Liverpool, New York native has improved every season as she posted a .556 batting average as a junior with 47 runs batted in, 50 runs scored and 24 stolen bases. Her 21 extra base hits (13 doubles, six triples, two home runs) led to a .938 slugging percentage as well.
Â
The junior season totals resulted in All-Central New York Player of the Year, All-League Player of the Year honors as well as First Team Class AA New York State, All-Central New York Team, All-Section III Team and First Team All-League nods.
Â
The six accolades complemented an already lengthy list of accolades as the infielder was already a two-time All-Central New York, two-time All-Section III Team, three-time All-League and First Team New York State Class AA in 2013.
Pressuring Defenses Since 2010
Currently hitting .727 at nearby William Nottingham High School with a .445 career batting average in high school is an alarming impressive success rate at the plate, but there's no question speed has greatly benefitted Wade's efforts at the plate and on the base paths. The incoming freshman has terrorized defenses for 104 in her high school career with 20 bags swiped in 2015.
Â
She has been a leader most of her competitive life, serving as a team captain since she was in seventh grade. Her electric style of play has led to first team All-League nods in 2012 and 2013 and second team honors in 2010 and 2011. In 2013 she was also named to the All-State and All-Central New York teams.
