Syracuse has the most representatives of any program
SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- Five former Syracuse lacrosse standouts are among the 31 players that have been invited to try out for the U.S. team that will compete in this year's Federation of International Lacrosse (FIL) World Indoor Championship – the most representatives of any collegiate program.
Syracuse has four defensemen on the tryout roster, with Brian Megill (2010-13) serving as the most recent 'Cuse representative. He's joined by Matt Abbott (2006-09), Joel White (2008-11) and Scott Ditzell (2004-05) on defense. Tim Desko, an attackman from 2009-12, is the lone Orange offensive representative.
Megill was a USILA Second Team All-American and a Tewaaraton Award nominee in both his junior and senior seasons and is Syracuse's all-time leader in caused turnovers (103).
Abbott, a Nottingham High Hchool product, was also a two-time USILA All-American, earning first-team honors in 2009 and third-team honors the year before. He was both a Tewaraton and Senior CLASS Award finalist in 2009 and finished his career with 212 ground balls.
White became the first defensive specialist to win the Lt. Donald C. MacLaughlin Jr. Award as the nation's most outstanding midfielder in 2010. He was a three-time USILA All-American, twice being named to the first team (2010, 2011) and was also a Tewaaraton Award finalist both seasons. The Cortland, N.Y. native is Syracuse's all-time leader in ground balls (283), points by a defender (28) and goals (18) by a defensive player.
Ditzell, a Geneva, N.Y. native, transferred to the Orange in 2004 after spending two seasons at Herkimer County Community College (HCCC). He was a team captain and All-American in 2005. Ditzell collected 73 ground balls in his two seasons with the Orange.
Desko was a co-captain as a senior in 2012 and finished third in scoring that season with 33 points (22 goals, 11 assists). An All-BIG EAST Second Team honoree in 2011, Desko is the son of Syracuse head coach John Desko.
The FIL World Indoor Lacrosse Championship will take place Sept. 18-27, with the preliminary round games played on the Onondaga Nation and at the War Memorial in Syracuse. The gold- and bronze-medal games will be held at the Carrier Dome on Sept. 27.
Thirteen nations are set to compete in the tournament. Canada is the three-time defending world indoor champion.
