SYRACUSE, N.Y.- Graduate student Alexis Koval registered an assist and the eventual game-winning goal for the Syracuse women's soccer team on Sunday afternoon, helping the Orange defeat in-state rival Colgate by a final score of 2-1 at the SU Soccer Stadium.
Â
Syracuse (3-4-1) snapped its three-game scoreless drought with its two goals against Colgate (2-5-0). The Orange outshot the Raiders 14-5, including seven shots on target.
Â
Koval continued her stellar season on Sunday as she leads the Orange in every offensive category. Thus far this year, Koval has already tied her career high for a season with three goals while setting new highs with four assists and 10 points. Koval also has prior scoring history against Colgate, scoring two goals against the Raiders in 2012.
"I thought today we came out with a lot of intensity," head coach Phil Wheddon said. "We came out with desire and passion and I thought defensively we were well organized and then the finishing was fantastic."
Â
In net, sophomore Courtney Brosnan tallied two saves, allowing the only Colgate goal on a penalty kick in the 81st minute. For the Raiders, Erin Cummings made five saves.
Â
The scoring did not get started until the second half, as Koval set up senior Maya Pitts for the game's first goal in the 53rd minute. Pitts collected the pass just outside of the '18, striking the ball with her left foot, burying it to the top left of the net for the score.
"We just came out with a different kind of energy this game," Koval said. "We had a fight and some grit to us and that is what we were focusing on all week."
Â
Koval opened the game up in the 73rd minute, receiving a pass from sophomore Sheridan Street inside the box, finding the back of the net to give the Orange a 2-0 lead. Colgate's Jenna Panepinto brought the Raiders within one after a foul inside the box led to a penalty kick. Panepinto just beat Brosnan to the right side to make it 2-1.
Â
The Orange played keep away for the remaining nine minutes to eventually come away with the win.
