SYRACUSE, N.Y.- Sophomore Alex Lamontagne scored two goals for the Syracuse women's soccer team against Drexel on Thursday night, leading the Orange past the Dragons in non-conference play by a final score of 3-2 at the SU Soccer Stadium.
Lamontagne registered the first two goals of the game for Syracuse (4-4-1), and senior Maya Pitts put on the finishing touches in the second half to secure the win. Drexel (6-3-0) pulled within one goal in the 82nd minute, but the Orange played keep away for the final eight minutes to come away with the victory.
Syracuse outshot the Dragons 16-10, but each side placed five shots on target. Pitts led the charge with four shots, including the eventual game-winning goal in the 75th minute. Lamontagne scored on both of the shots that she took.
The Orange opened the scoring in the first half, starting with Lamontagne finding the back of the net in the 40th minute. The sophomore found an opening down the field and flicked the ball to herself past Drexel goalkeeper Eve Badana, finishing on an empty net to give Syracuse a 1-0 lead.
'Cuse entered the second half with a 1-0 lead, but Drexel did not take long to equalize. Like Lamontagne's goal, Drexel player Vanessa Kara collected the ball up top, making a move around Brosnan to notch the game up at one on an empty net in the 48th minute. The game was not tied for very long, as Lamontagne accepted a fantastic through ball from senior Jackie Firenze just two minutes later to give the Orange back a lead at 2-1.
"Jackie played me a beautiful through ball and I just had to one-touch finish that," Lamontagne said. "She definitely made it way easier for me, just playing the ball to my feet. That was perfect."
Pitts then extended the Orange lead to two goals with only 15 minutes left as Syracuse held on to defeat Drexel in its final non-conference contest.
"We knew that the non-conference schedule was going to be challenging for us, Drexel included," head coach Phil Wheddon said. "They were 6-2 coming in here and knew that they had dynamic forwards. I am proud of our team."
The Orange have a tough rough ahead, starting this Sunday when it takes on No. 1 Virginia at 2 p.m.
"Virginia is a very good team and are very well coached," Wheddon said. "But, I am excited to play them and I think we are in a good place."
