SYRACUSE, N.Y.- The Syracuse women's soccer team hosts Drexel for its final non-conference contest on Thursday, Sept. 17 at 7:00 p.m. before opening Atlantic Coast Conference play against No. 1 Virginia on Sunday.
Syracuse (3-4-1) is coming off a 2-1 win over in-state rival Colgate on Sunday, as graduate student Alexis Koval registered an assist and the eventual game-winning goal to beat the Raiders. Drexel (6-2-0) is winners of its last two contests, including a 2-1 victory over Niagra last game.
"Drexel has some very good weapons so we have to make sure that we are organized and make sure that we are able to cope with what they will throw at us," head coach Phil Wheddon said. "Drexel is a well-coached team. They've changed their lineup numerous times throughout the season, so we have to be prepared for the unexpected."
The Orange and Dragons played last season for the first time against each other and concluded the match with a 2-2 draw. For Syracuse, Jessica Vigna tallied a goal as well as an assist on a score from Maya Pitts. The Orange controlled a 2-0 lead after the first half, but Lauren Stollar registered two second-half goals to equalize, ending the match in a tie.
The recent 2-1 win against Colgate ended a three-game scoring drought for the Orange, which included a 0-0 2OT tie to Cornell.
"The game against Colgate was a big confidence booster for us," sophomore Sheridan Street said. "We came off a couple of losses so we are happy to get some goals in and we hope that will propel us forward for Thursday's game."
Koval continues to be a difference maker out on the pitch for the Orange, leading Syracuse this season with three goals and four assists for 10 total points. As for Drexel, Vanessa Kara leads the way with four goals and two assists, matching Koval with 10 points.
The game against Drexel is the final non-conference contest of the season for the Orange. After Thursday's game, Syracuse has a tough road ahead starting with an away game on Sunday at No. 1 Virginia. Following Virginia on the schedule are No. 3 North Carolina and No. 9 Virginia Tech, both of which are also on the road.
"Our non-conference schedule is well balanced," Wheddon said. "It prepares us playing against some great teams in the ACC."
