'Cuse cruises to 23-10 win behind game MVP Robert Drummond
With Syracuse's much-anticipated matchup with No. 8 LSU two days away, Cuse.com flashes back to the last time the Orange and Tigers met on the gridiron. The date was Jan. 2, 1989 and the game was the Hall of Fame Bowl (now the Outback Bowl) at Tampa Stadium.
TAMPA, Fla. – For the second straight season the Orange reached double figures in wins, dumping Southeastern Conference co-champion LSU, 23-10, in the third Hall of Fame Bowl at Tampa Stadium.
Running back Robert Drummond ended his SU career in style, winning game MVP honors with 122 yards rushing and two touchdowns on 23 carries. Daryl Johnston added 74 yards on the ground, and quarterback Todd Philcox completed 16-of-23 passes for 130 yards and a touchdown.
The Orange surrendered just 14 first downs (five in the second half) and 76 yards rushing. Linebacker Dan Bucey had a game-high 10 tackles and David Holmes intercepted two passes to the key the defensive effort.
"Some games we were ready to play and some we weren't," LSU head coach Mike Archer said afterward. "In the second half, we coudn't make a yard."
The Orange took the opening kickoff and went 80 yards in 14 plays, capped by Drummond's 2-yard touchdown run. A 38-yard field goal by Kevin Greene pushed the Syracuse lead to 10-0 before the Tigers got on the board with a 19-yard touchdown run by Calvin Windom to make it 10-7 at the break.
In the second half, LSU tied the game on a David Browndyke field goal from 35 yards out, but it was all Syracuse after that. The Orange defense kept the Tigers off the scoreboard for the final 26:39, allowing Philcox and the offense to take over. Drummond plunged into the end zone from a yard out in the third quarter, and Philcox tossed a 4-yard TD pass to Deval Glover early in the fourth to complete the scoring.
"I thought we were a real good football team today," Orange head coach Dick MacPherson said. "You have to be to play someone like LSU and beat them."
