Orange, Brosnan Battle In 1-0 Setback To #25 UConn
9/3/2015 7:12:00 PM | Women's Soccer
STORRS, Conn.- Despite a strong performance in net from sophomore Courtney Brosnan against No. 25 Connecticut on Thursday night, the Syracuse women's soccer team was unable to find the back of the net, losing to the Huskies by a final score of 1-0 in non-conference play.
Â
Brosnan made seven saves in net for Syracuse (2-3-0) against undefeated Connecticut (4-0-0), but the Orange were held scoreless by Huskies' goalkeeper Emily Armstrong. Armstrong tallied eight saves in net for the Huskies, securing the clean sheet.
Â
The Orange registered 10 total shots with eight on target while UConn fired 14 shots toward Brosnan. Sophomore Alex Lamontagne led the offensive charge with three shots that were all scooped up by Armstrong. Senior Maya Pitts also connected on three shots with one on target.Â
"It was another hard fought game that was played even with two fast, physical teams," head coach Phil Wheddon said. "We had opportunities to win the game, but unfortunately UConn capitalized on its one quality opportunity."
Â
Despite not having any goals in the first half of play, there was a lot of action. Brosnan made six saves on eight shots in the first while Armstrong registered seven saves on nine shots. At the end of the first half, both teams were notched up at zero.
"Courtney is doing everything we are asking her to do," Wheddon said. "She is making saves look easy with good positioning and her ability to read the game."
Â
UConn scored the only goal of the game in the 75th minute when it was Stephanie Ribeiro collecting a pass outside the box from Samantha McGuire, beating Brosnan on a ground shot. Ribeiro's goal would eventually be enough as the Huskies held on to win 1-0.
"UConn was another tough opponent that will prepare us for a tough ACC schedule," Wheddon said. "It is tough to lose to a close rival, but we will have to rebound for another top 50 RPI team in Buffalo."
Â
Syracuse will stay on the road for its next game on Sunday afternoon, as the Orange take on Buffalo at noon. Live stats can be accessed via Cuse.com.
