9/6/2015 2:52:00 PM | Women's Soccer
SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Syracuse women's soccer team outshot Buffalo 23-13 on Sunday afternoon, but the Orange was unable to find the back of the net, losing to the Bulls in double overtime by a final score of 1-0 at UB Stadium.
Sophomore goalkeeper Courtney Brosnan made a diving save for Syracuse (2-4-0) on a Buffalo (3-2-0) penalty kick in the 89th minute to give the Orange a chance in overtime. Unfortunately for 'Cuse, Dana Lytle ended the game in the 108th minute after collecting a shot off the post to bury it home for the game-winning goal.
"Courtney was spectacular in goal and saved us on one occasion," head coach Phil Wheddon said. "The loss comes down to individual, technical breakdowns."
The Orange tallied eight shots on goal, including two each from senior midfielder Jackie Firenze and sophomore forward Eva Gordon. Brosnan made six saves in net for 'Cuse before the late goal from Lytle in the second overtime frame. Bulls' goalkeeper Laura Dougall made eight saves in the contest, keeping Syracuse scoreless, resulting in the clean sheet.
"It was a dominant performance in every category except the one that really matters," Wheddon said. "We were dynamic in attack and created multiple opportunities to score. Even though our focus on training has been on scoring, we were unable to capitalize."
Syracuse dominated every aspect of the game except for the end result. The Orange had 11 corner kicks compared to the two from Buffalo. It is the second consecutive game that Syracuse failed to score a goal. The loss for 'Cuse was its first ever to Buffalo, coming into Sundaywith an overall record of 5-0-1 against the Bulls.
Military and First Responder's Appreciation games for men's and women's soccer will be held on Friday, September 11 at the SU Soccer Stadium. The doubleheader starts with the women taking on Cornell at 3:30 p.m. before the men face Louisville in its ACC opener of the season at 7 p.m.
Syracuse fans are invited to pay tribute to the military. Live stats for the game can be accessed via Cuse.com.
