SYRACUSE, N.Y.- The Syracuse women's soccer team welcomes in-state rivals Cornell and Colgate for a pair of home games at the SU Soccer Stadium this weekend, starting with its first contest against the Big Red on Friday at 3:30 p.m.
Syracuse (2-4-0) will start off the weekend on Friday by hosting Military and First Responders Appreciation Day against undefeated Cornell (3-0-1). The game against the Big Red will honor military personnel and first responders for their services. The men's soccer team will follow the contest with its ACC opener against Louisville at 7 p.m.
'Cuse is coming off two consecutive 1-0 losses to #25 UConn and Buffalo. The Orange are hoping to bounce back this weekend against two tough opponents in Cornell and Colgate (2-4-0).
"This week is all about taking care of the details. We put in two very dominant performances, but came out on the wrong end of it," head coach Phil Wheddon said. "We have to be dynamic up front and make sure that we are making the most of our opportunities headed into this weekend."
The Big Red have yet to allow a goal this season, entering Friday's contest with seven total goals on the year. Cornell is currently riding a three-game winning streaking that includes victories over Akron, Cleveland State and Loyola. Both Elizabeth Crowell and Paige DeLoach have registered two goals each this season to lead the Big Red in scoring.
"Cornell hasn't conceded a goal and they are scoring goals, so we have to make sure in transition we don't get caught defensively," Wheddon said. "But when we do get the opportunity, we will have to move fast and with numbers."
The Orange has outshot its opponents 87-64 in six total games, but has had trouble scoring as of late, losing four games this year by a final score of 1-0. Cornell is outshooting its competition 67-18 so far this season, dominating teams offensively. In net, Kelsey Tierney has started all four games, garnering a perfect 1.000 save percentage, making seven total saves. Syracuse is 5-0-1 all-time against Cornell.
After Friday's contest against Cornell, the Orange will get back to work on Sunday, taking on Colgate at 3 p.m. Syracuse is 14-3-1 overall against the Raiders, losing last season to Colgate by a final score of 1-0.
Colgate is coming off a 3-1 win over Providence, who beat Syracuse earlier this season 1-0. Emily Crichlow leads the Raiders with three goals while Eliza Doll has a goal and assist. Crichlow scored the game-winning goal for Colgate last season against the Orange, coming in only the fourth minute.
'Cuse will also host its Girl Scout Day on Sunday against the Raiders, honoring local Boy Scout and Girl Scout troops as special guests.
"After being on the road over the past week, it's great to be able to come back to 'Cuse and play at home in front of our fans this coming weekend," Wheddon said.
Live stats for Friday's game against Cornell can be accessed via Cuse.com. Both live video and live stats will be available for Sunday's game against Colgate, including a live broadcast on the Time Warner Sports Channel.
