SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The No. 25 Syracuse University women's basketball bounced back with a 60-39 victory against RV/RV Virginia Tech in the Carrier Dome on Sunday afternoon. With the win, Syracuse has won two of its first three Atlantic Coast Conference contests for the first time in program history.
Â
"It was nice to come back and get a response from losing the other day," head coach Quentin Hillsman stated. "I am just really happy with getting back on the winning track. Most importantly, our pressure was amazing today. We did an excellent job of getting into our press every possession."
Â
For the fourth time in 2015-16 season, Syracuse (12-4, 2-1) led for the entirety of the contest in its victory against Virginia Tech (13-3, 1-2). The Orange closed the first half on a 9-1 run and led by double-digits for the rest of the day.
Â
As per usual, the Syracuse defense was stifling on Sunday afternoon. Heading into the game, the Orange ranked third in the nation with 25.13 turnovers forced per contest. SU forced 29 turnovers in its third conference game of the 2015-16 campaign.
Â
Another key to the team's success on Sunday was its ability to rebound on the offensive glass. Syracuse ranked sixth in the country with 18.0 offensive rebounds per game, heading into the contest. The Orange pulled down 27 offensive boards against the Hokies.
Â
Junior guard Alexis Peterson tallied a team-high 16 points and dished out seven assists in the squad's third league game. It marked Peterson's 14th game of the year with at least 10 points. In addition, it was her sixth straight game with at least six helpers.
Â
Classmate Briana Day finished with 12 points on the day, as well. Senior guard Cornelia Fondren paced the team in rebounds, securing a personal-best 12 boards against the Hokies.
Â
Syracuse will play its second consecutive contest in the friendly confines of the Carrier Dome on Thursday night when it hosts Pittsburgh. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. and the game will be broadcast on ESPN3. Tickets can be purchased online, by phone at 1-888-DOMETIX, or by visiting the Carrier Dome box office (Gate B).Â
