Redshirt senior guard Maggie Morrison scored a career-high 25 points
SYRACUSE, N.Y – Head coach Quentin Hillsman recorded his 200th victory of his collegiate coaching career as the RV/RV Syracuse University women's basketball team trounced No. 12/12 Duke, 86-50, on Sunday afternoon in the Carrier Dome. It marked Syracuse's largest margin of victory against a top-25 opponent in program history.
Â
"Our kids came out ready to go and were tough," Hillsman stated. "They really followed our game plan. Our players did a very good job. I have to give Maggie Morrison a ton of credit. She came in and hit a ton of shots."
Â
In its first Atlantic Coast Conference contest of the 2015-16 season, Syracuse (11-3, 1-0) opened the game on a 15-3 run and never looked back against Duke (11-4, 0-1). The Blue Devils once trimmed the deficit to nine points, but that would be the closest it would get as the Orange coasted to a 36-point victory. It marked Duke's largest margin of defeat in conference play since a 97-61 loss against Virginia on Feb. 13, 1993.
Â
The Syracuse defense was stifling on Sunday afternoon. Heading into the contest, the Orange ranked fourth nationally with 25.00 turnovers forced per contest. The Blue Devils committed 32 turnovers on the day. SU capitalized off the misfortune of its opponents, scoring 27 points off turnovers.
Â
Syracuse was efficient on the offensive end, as well. The Orange made 32-of-64 of its field goal attempts, its best field goal percentage of the 2015-16 campaign. The squad also knocked down 14 3-point field goals, which was one shy of matching the program single-game record.
Â
Redshirt senior guard Maggie Morrison was spectacular on Sunday afternoon, recording a career-high 25 points in the victory. The Millersville, Md. native knocked down a personal-best seven 3-point field goals on the day, one shy of matching the Syracuse single-game record.
Â
Junior guard Alexis Peterson tallied 17 points and a career-high 13 assists against Duke. Peterson was two assists shy of tying the program single-game record and her 13 helpers were the most by a Syracuse player since Nov. 22, 2000. Even more impressive, the Columbus, Ohio product only turned the ball over twice.
Â
Redshirt junior guard Brittney Sykes scored 13 points and pulled down five rebounds against the Blue Devils. Senior guard Brianna Butler knocked down four 3-point field goals en route to a 12-point effort. Butler is four points shy of moving into eighth place on the SU all-time scoring list.
The Orange will play its second conference contest on Thursday, Jan. 7 at North Carolina. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. in Carmichael Arena in Chapel Hill, N.C. The game will be broadcast on ESPN3. Â
