SYRACUSE, N.Y.- Syracuse played Clemson down to the final buzzer of overtime on Tuesday night, but was unable to come away with the Atlantic Coast Conference victory, losing 74-73 at the Carrier Dome.
Senior Trevor Cooney had a chance to win the game for Syracuse (10-6, 0-3 ACC) at the end of overtime, but rimmed out a three-point shot that allowed Clemson (8-6, 2-1 ACC) to prevail. Despite the Orange holding a three-point lead with seconds left on the clock in regulation, Tigers' guard Gabe DeVoe knocked down a three to take the game into overtime.
A strong second half from the Orange is what eventually took the game into overtime, as Syracuse outscored the Tigers by eight, 36-28. Syracuse had four different players finish in double-figures, including a game-high 22 points from graduate student Michael Gbinije.
Freshman Malachi Richardson put together a strong performance, registering 21 points that included a 5-of-7 effort from beyond the arc. Richardson also added a career-high nine rebounds. Junior Tyler Roberson and graduate student Trevor Cooney finished the contest with 14 and 12 points, respectively.
Syracuse came out of the gate strong by opening a 5-0 lead in the first two minutes of play, but Clemson fired back with a few runs of its own. After a three from Gbinije to give the Orange a 15-13 lead at the 12:20 mark, the Tigers went on an 8-0 run to go up by six with 8:19 left in the first half. Clemson led by as many as 10 in the first half before taking a 33-25 lead into the intermission.
The Tigers led for majority of the second half, including an eight-point lead at the 13:27 mark before Syracuse could find an answer. After moving within five points with under 10 minutes left in the game, the Orange went on a 7-0 run that included two threes from Gbinije. Syracuse led by as many as four down the stretch of regulation, but Clemson refused to back down, making a comeback that eventually took down the Orange in overtime by one point, 74-73.
