The Orange battle back after getting behind twice to tie Northeastern
BOSTON, Mass. – It only counts as a tie, but the Syracuse women's ice hockey team showed they had something to prove against Northeastern on Friday night in Boston, Mass. The two teams ended the game in a 2-2 stalemate at Matthews Arena.
On two different occasions the Orange fell behind by one goal, but would answer with a goal of their own, as if to say, "Anything you can do, I can do, too."
"It was pretty much a back and forth battle all night," head coach Paul Flanagan said. "Both teams had many great scoring opportunities with both goalies coming up big. We played hard from start to finish and our compete level was excellent. Hopefully we can build off our effort tonight and carry that attitude into tomorrow's game."
The scoring began in the second period when Northeastern got on the board with a goal from Denisa Krizova on the power play. A crowd of players formed in front of Syracuse goalie Abbey Miller and a scrum ensued. In the action, the puck popped out to Krizova who was waiting a few feet away. Krizova launched it in, going above Miller into the net.
A little over a minute later on a power play of their own, Lindsay Eastwood found Jessica Sibley who fired the puck into a group of people. Savannah Rennie reached out with her stick and put the puck in to give the Orange an equalizer. It was the first career goal for the freshman in only her third game.
In the third period, the Huskies retook the lead, 2-1. The puck flew into the air from Maddie Hartman and McKenna Brand caught it on her stick to score. The goal was initially waved off, but after review the officials ruled that her stick was not above the crossbar.
That lead held a little longer this time around, but in the 10th minute of the third period Alysha Burriss stepped up and delivered a game-tying goal on the power play. On a Megan Quinn and Stephanie Grossi double assist, Burriss buried the puck into the goal from a few feet out.
One of the stars of the night for the Orange was Miller, who had 23 saves in the game. The 23 saves were a career-high for the junior, topping her 22 saves against Providence on Oct. 18, 2014. Miller was tested for much of the game and came away with several impressive saves, including a shot she gloved down with only 1:20 remaining in the game.
Syracuse moves to 0-2-1 on the season, while Northeastern moves to 2-2-1.
The Orange and the Huskies will look to settle the score on Saturday at 2 p.m. at Matthews Arena in the second game of a two-game series.
