Gorelina leads in kills for ‘Cuse
ATLANTA, Ga. – The Orange blocking effort wasn't enough on Sunday afternoon, as the Syracuse volleyball team fell in three sets (15-25, 23-25, 18-25) to Georgia Tech on the road to split the weekend. 'Cuse is now 4-4 in conference play and 5-13 overall on the season.
The Orange have split all four weekends of ACC play, garnering wins over Boston College, Miami, Louisville and Clemson.
Syracuse out-blocked the Yellow Jackets 7.5-4.0, but Georgia Tech was able to make the sweep thanks to a game-leading 18 kills from Teegan Van Gunst.
Outside hitter Anastasiya Gorelina led the offensive effort for the Orange, as the sophomore tallied eight kills on the night. Gorelina also had two assists, four digs and one assisted stop at the net.
Freshman Kendra Lukacs was right behind with seven kills of her own, along with six digs.
Leah Levert and Christina Oyawale contributed on offense as well, as the junior and redshirt sophomore had six and four kills, respectively. Each tallied five assisted blocks, while Oyawale had a solo stop at the net.
The Ramblin' Wreck started game one off with a quick 13-4 run to force a Syracuse timeout.
Trying to get back in the game, 'Cuse tallied an 8-3 run late in the first set, but it wasn't enough as Georgia Tech closed out the game, 25-15.
Set two proved to be much closer, as the Orange ended the set within two points of the Yellow Jackets.
The pair traded off the lead early on in the second, until Georgia Tech called its first timeout trailing Syracuse, 13-12.
The game remained close through the next few points, until the Yellow Jackets took a two-point lead to push the Syracuse timeout (20-18 GT).
Syracuse tallied a 4-0 run to tie the game at 23, but Georgia Tech was able to score two consecutive points to close out set two, 25-23.
Georgia Tech started off set three with a quick 4-0 run to force an early Syracuse timeout.
Eager to fight back, the Orange made their largest stride late in the third with a 5-0 run to come within six points of Georgia Tech (24-18 GT), but the Yellow Jackets were able to halt the momentum and close out set three, 25-18.
Syracuse remains on the road next weekend, as the volleyball team travels to North Carolina to play ACC foe NC State and North Carolina.
