Bennett's Long Distance Boot Gives Syracuse Win vs. Pitt

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Freshman Taylor Bennett scored her second goal of the season from long distance to give the Syracuse women's soccer team a 1-0 win against Pittsburgh on Sunday afternoon at the SU Soccer Stadium.
Bennett lined up to take a free kick from about 25 yards out after Pittsburgh was called for a handball foul. She ran forward and fired the shot past the line of Pitt players in front of her and towards the upper left corner of the goal. The Pitt goalkeeper jumped and put a glove on it, but it wasn't enough, the ball had too much velocity.
It was the second goal of Bennett's career. Both goals have come on free kicks from distance.
Junior goalkeeper Courtney Brosnan turned in another impressive performance with her sixth shutout of the season, the third highest total in Syracuse history. Brosnan, the reigning ACC Co-Defender of the Week, finished the game with five saves. Brosnan has a 1.09 goals against average for the season.
The Orange had chances throughout the game and looked dangerous in the attack on several occasions. Sheridan Street and Alex Lamontagne finished with three shots each in the contest and Eva Gordon had two. In total, seven Syracuse players got a shot off against the Panthers.
Syracuse improved to 8-5-3 on the season and 1-4-2 in the Atlantic Coast Conference. Pittsburgh dropped to 2-12-1 in 2016 and 1-6-0 in the ACC.
The Orange will be back in action on Thursday, Oct. 20 at Wake Forest (9-6-0, 1-6-0). Syracuse will then return to SU Soccer Stadium for Senior Day and the final regular season home game on Sunday, Oct. 23 to host No. 11 North Carolina at 1 p.m.
