WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – In a back-and-forth match that came down to the wire, Syracuse women's soccer team came up short in a 3-2 loss to Wake Forest in double overtime at Spry Stadium in Winston-Salem, N.C.
"I was pleased with our focus and discipline," head coach Phil Wheddon said. "Coming to Wake Forest is a very difficult place to play. They are a very good team. I was proud of our resilience. They stuck to the game plan and they were dangerous all over the field. The chances we created were quite the opportunities."
Senior Stephanie Skilton scored the first goal of the game in the 27th minute following a corner kick from Maddie Iozzi. The Demon Deacons followed up with a goal of their own out of halftime to tie up the game. Wake Forest took the lead in the 83rd minute, but Skilton scored her second goal of the game to tie up the game at 2-2 with under two minutes left in regulation. Alex Lamontagne and Jessica Vigna assisted on the goal.
Neither team found the back of the net in the first overtime, so the match extended to a second extra period. Time was ticking down, when Wake Forest was awarded a free kick. With a little over two minutes left, Sarah Teegarden lined up and bent the ball into the right side of the goal.
Wake Forest has fared well at Spry Stadium in 2016, owning a 9-2 record at home. The only two losses were to No. 17 Clemson and No. 4 Duke. Both games were won by one goal.
Skilton moves into third place on Syracuse's all-time career goal list, tied with Nina Scalzo, with 26 goals in her Orange career.
Syracuse scored first for the third consecutive game. The Orange are 8-1-3 this season when scoring first.
Goalkeeper Courtney Brosnan finished with seven saves in the game. She is one save shy of matching her total from last season (81).
"I'm really proud of our team's effort, energy and work ethic," Wheddon said. "It was a hard-fought game and now we need to turn our attention to North Carolina on Sunday."
The Orange return to SU Soccer Stadium on Sunday, Oct. 23 at 1 p.m. to host No. 18 North Carolina for Senior Day. Syracuse will be honoring five seniors in a ceremony.
