HAMILTON, N.Y. – For the second time in two days, Syracuse women's ice hockey and No. 5 Colgate came down to the wire on Saturday afternoon at Class of 1965 Arena. The two teams exchanged goals in the first and third periods, to end in a 2-2 draw.
Â
Heather Schwarz put the Orange up 1-0 four minutes into the game. Alysha Burriss had an assist on the score. Colgate tied the game up on the power play nearly six minutes later.
Â
The second period was a defensive battle between the two teams, with no goals being scored. Goalie Abbey Miller turned away 14 shots in the period, including a sequence of 13 shots at the end of the frame when she registered five saves. During that flurry of shots, the Orange defense also blocked five of the attempts.
Â
The excitement grew in the third period, with both teams looking for a game-winner. With 6:33 left in the game, Stephanie Grossi put Syracuse ahead 2-1. Lindsay Eastwood found Grossi in close range of the net and Grossi finished for the go-ahead goal.
Â
As time dwindled down, Colgate opted for an empty net sending six players on offense. A penalty by the Orange made the attack 6-on-4. The strategy worked as the Raiders scored with 25 seconds remaining in the game to tie the game and send it to overtime.
Â
"We played hard today from start to finish," head coach Paul Flanagan said. "One too many trips to the penalty box did us in."
Â
Each team had opportunities in extra time, but neither capitalized ending the game even at 2-2.
Â
The Orange were plagued by penalties throughout the contest with nine total going against 'Cuse. While both of Colgate's goals came on power plays, Syracuse was able to kill of seven other penalties.
Â
Miller continues to impress in net for the Orange as she registered a new career-high 35 saves in the game. The junior had 49 saves on the weekend, more than her season total in the previous two seasons (2014-15: 34, 2015-16: 35).
Â
Syracuse moves to 0-4-2 on the season, while Colgate moves to 5-0-1.
Â
"We have a lot of work to do this coming week to straighten some things out and prepare for Lindenwood," Flanagan said.
Â
Syracuse will be back in action on Oct. 28 and 29 at Tennity Ice Pavilion. The Orange host Lindenwood to open College Hockey America play. Friday's game is set to begin at 4 p.m. Saturday's contest will begin at 3 p.m. and will be streamed on ACC Network Extra.
