SYRACUSE, N.Y. – No. 6 Syracuse overcame playing a man down for more than 104 minutes to tie No. 2 Wake Forest, 1-1, on Friday, Oct. 28 at the SU Soccer Stadium. The Orange end the regular season with an overall record of 10-3-3 and a 3-2-3 mark in ACC play.
Â
Syracuse earned a corner kick in the sixth minute, and senior Oyvind Alseth served the ball into the box. As the players from both teams battled for the ball, sophomore Miles Robinson was assessed a red card at the 5:15 mark, forcing Syracuse to play with just 10 players on the field for the remainder of the match.
Â
"It's a double whammy because, that early in the game, you lose one of your players and you lose him for the next game too," said Syracuse head coach Ian McIntyre. "We have some wonderful guys who stepped up and played a lot of soccer tonight. I'm very proud of them. It was senior night and they led by example, but we leaned on some younger guys tonight. I thought they stepped up and stood up to the challenge."
Â
The Demon Deacons (12-2-3, 5-1-2) took the lead in the 23rd minute. Kevin Politz fought off an Orange defender and passed the ball to Jon Bakero, who put his shot in the left corner of the net for his fourth goal of the year.
Â
Wake Forest continued to apply pressure on Syracuse, but it successfully defended against two corners and goalkeeper Hendrik Hilpert made two saves to keep the Orange within striking distance.
Â
Syracuse tied the score at the 35 minute mark. Senior Liam Callahan served the ball into the box off a free kick where it bounced off a couple of players before sophomore Kamal Miller gained possession. His shot deflected off a Wake Forest defender into the left corner of the net to even the score at 1-1. The Demon Deacons were the more dangerous team for the remainder of the half, but couldn't solve the Syracuse defense.
Â
Wake Forest outshot the Orange, 10-2, in the second half, but only two of their shots were on target, which Hilpert handled to send the game to overtime. The Demon Deacons earned a corner kick in the 98th minute, but couldn't get off a shot as the teams headed to a second extra session. Hilpert stopped Wake Forest's only shot on goal in the second overtime as the match ended in a 1-1 tie.
Â
"The nature of the game changes when you're a man down," McIntyre said. "They are a tough enough team to disrupt their rhythm when you have 11 players versus 11. When you're a player down, you have to kind of change a little bit, but I thought our guys showed discipline. They fought and had quality as well when we had the ball. Big effort tonight."
Â
Wake Forest held a 21-6 advantage in shots and earned 10 corner kicks to three for Syracuse. Hilpert recorded a career-high six saves for the Orange, while Alex Ferrell had one save for the Demon Deacons.
Â
The Orange will play in the ACC Tournament starting next Wednesday, Nov. 2. The complete pairings for the tournament will be announced on Saturday.
