ALBANY, N.Y. – No. 3 Syracuse men's soccer team gave up the go-ahead goal in the 75th minute in a 2-1 setback at Albany on Tuesday, Oct. 4. The Orange are now 8-2-1 overall.
Â
Albany took an early lead in the third minute. The Great Danes (5-3-2) crossed the ball into the box where Syracuse goalkeeper Hendrik Hilpert (Eiterfeld, Germany) blocked it, but couldn't control the ball. The deflection went to Leo Melgar, who put his shot high in the center of the net for his second goal of the season.
Â
The Orange had a chance to even the score in the 33rd minute when they were awarded a free kick just outside the box. But freshman Johannes Pieles' shot sailed over the crossbar. Syracuse didn't miss in the 38th minute. Senior Chris Nanco's aggressive play led to a corner kick. The Orange's initial shot went off the crossbar and deflected to sophomore Kamal Miller on the left side of the box. His first shot was saved on the goal line, but again deflected back to him. He buried his next shot in the back of the net for his first goal of the season to even the score at 1-1.
Â
The Great Danes recorded the game-winner at the 74:12 mark. Keith Traut served the ball to the far post where he connected with Jonathan Interiano. Interiano put his shot in the left corner of the net for his first goal of the season.
Â
"We weren't at our best tonight," said Syracuse head coach Ian McIntyre. "We could have scored a second goal in the first half but we didn't. We didn't create a lot of chances in the second half."
Â
Syracuse outshot Albany, 12-9, and had seven corner kicks to one for the Great Danes. Hilpert recorded three saves, while Lucas Vallilo made six saves for Albany.
Â
The Orange return to ACC play on Friday, Oct. 7 when they travel to Louisville to face the No. 8 Cardinals at 7 p.m.
