LOUISVILLE, Ky. – A Louisville goal in the 23rd minute was the difference in the game as the No. 8 Cardinals defeated No. 3 Syracuse, 1-0, in men's soccer action on Friday, Oct. 7. The Orange go to 8-3-1 overall, 2-2-1 in ACC play, while Louisville improves to 9-1-2, 4-0-1 in league action.
Â
The Cardinals had an early chance, but Jack Gayton's shot 1:35 into the match hit the post. Syracuse's best scoring chance of the first half came in the 18th minute off a corner kick, but senior Sergio Camargo's shot went just outside the near post. Louisville took the lead in the 23rd minute when Mohamed Thiaw got around a Syracuse defender and put his shot over a charging Orange goalkeeper Hendrik Hilpert for his team-leading ninth goal of the season.
Â
The Orange regrouped, were more organized and controlled possession for the remainder of the half, but couldn't get off a shot on goal as they trailed, 1-0, at intermission.
Â
Syracuse was the more dangerous team throughout the second half, recording eight shots while allowing just three. A free kick in the 47th minute resulted in a shot by Camargo that went high. The Orange's best scoring chance came on a corner kick in the 66th minute. Senior Oyvind Alseth served the ball into the box, but freshman Johannes Pieles' header went over the crossbar. Louisville goalkeeper Stefan Cleveland kept Syracuse off the scoreboard with a save on sophomore Jonathan Hagman's hard shot from the right side in the 84th minute. That would be the Orange's final shot as they lose a second straight game for the first time since 2011.
Â
"They are a very good team and this is a tough place to play," said Syracuse head coach Ian McIntyre. "I thought we were excellent tonight. Up until that goal, I thought we were managing the game well, creating some half chances. They had the one off the post, the other chance (on the goal) and then they did a good job of disrupting the game. The second half, the wind picked up, and we kept pushing and had a lot of chances. I think, on another night, we could have come away with some points."
Â
Overall, Syracuse outshot Louisville, 11-6, and had seven corner kicks to two for the Cardinals. Hilpert recorded one save, while Cleveland had six for UofL.
Â
"I'm not an unhappy coach tonight," McIntyre said. "We're all disappointed because we dropped some important ACC points tonight. I think we responded well (after Tuesday's loss). We had three freshmen play the entire match tonight, and they will learn a lot from this. We had some young players step up."
Â
After a pair of road matches, Syracuse returns to the SU Soccer Stadium to host No. 18 Virginia Tech on Friday, Oct. 14 at 7 p.m. Admission is free.
