SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Goalkeeper Courtney Brosnan and the Syracuse women's soccer team turned in an impressive performance against the No. 2 team in the country, Florida State, on Sunday afternoon at the SU Soccer Stadium. The Orange and Seminoles went back and forth throughout the match and the contest ended in a 1-1 tie.
Brosnan finished the game with 15 saves, a new career-high. It also marks the second-highest single-game saves total in Syracuse history, behind Shannon Myers 17 saves at Princeton on Oct. 27, 2004. With 217 career-saves, the junior now ranks fourth all-time in program history.
"Courtney has been great for us all year," head coach Phil Wheddon said. "I've said all along, she's one of the best goalkeepers in the ACC. The number of shots on goal shows Florida State's efficiency and for her to come up big like that is a massive boost."
The Orange got on the board first with a goal from Alex Lamontagne in the first minute of action. Lamontagne put the Seminole defense, which had previously allowed only four goals all season, on their toes with her first goal of the season.
Florida State tied up the game with a goal on the attack in the 24th minute. Megan Connolly found a streaking Elin Jensen on the right side of the box for the goal.
"Today we played a very, very good defensive team," Wheddon said. "Florida State is No. 2 in the country for a reason. They're well-coached and well-organized. We had one day of training to implement a slightly different defensive system. I couldn't be more proud of the way they came through and executed what we asked them to do was absolutely tremendous."
Both teams had chances throughout the game to go ahead, but neither team found the back of the net in the second half or either overtime periods. Brosnan and the defense put together an effort clearing out several crosses and shots. On multiple occasions, Brosnan made saves from the ground after diving after the first shot.
Syracuse moves to 7-5-3 on the season and 0-4-2 in the ACC. Florida State is now 9-2-2 overall and 3-1-2 in conference play.
The Orange will be back in action on Sunday, Oct. 16 at SU Soccer Stadium when they host Pittsburgh (2-11-1, 1-5-0)
