Five Orange score in double-digits
SYRACUSE, N.Y. – A 49-point first-half set the table for victory for the Orange, as Syracuse (2-0) defeated Holy Cross (0-2), 90-46, in the opening game of the Brooklyn Hoops Holiday Invitational on Tuesday night at the Carrier Dome.
Andrew White III led the Orange with 19 points on the night, while Tyler Lydon followed closely with 17. Three other Orange players scored in double-digits, as John Gillon tallied 15, Tyler Roberson had 12, and Taurean Thompson added 10.
White III led the charge for Syracuse in the first half, tallying 16 points. The graduate transfer hit back-to-back 3-pointers and freshman Tyus Battle added a 3-ball in the middle of the first to begin a 14-0 run that put the Orange ahead of Holy Cross, 36-14. The Crusaders shaved the margin to 18 but Syracuse closed out the half with a 10-2 stretch that put the hosts ahead at the intermission, 49-23.
Syracuse's 49-point first-half output was the team's best since the Orange had 50 against Charlotte in the 2015 Battle 4 Atlantis.
The trio of White III, Lydon and Gillon combined for 14 points to start the second half, increasing the lead to 63-29 with 12:20 left in the contest.
Gillon nearly tallied his first double-double in the Orange uniform, as the graduate transfer added a game-leading nine assists to his 15-point performance.
Lydon, Roberson and DaJuan Coleman grabbed six rebounds apiece for Syracuse. Paschal Chukwu had five rebounds and three blocks off the bench.
The last time that Syracuse tallied 90 points in a game was Feb. 1, 2014 when the Orange defeated rival Duke, 91-89, in front of an NCAA record 35,446 fans at the Carrier Dome.
The Brooklyn Hoops Holiday Invitational continues on Friday, Nov. 18, when the Orange host Monmouth at 7:00 p.m. game in the Carrier Dome.
