Syracuse defeats George Washington, 74-71
ETSERO, Fla. – The No. 11/18 Syracuse women's basketball team escaped with a 74-71 victory against George Washington on Friday night in the quarterfinals of the Gulf Coast Showcase.
Syracuse (4-1) returns to action on Saturday night at 7:30 p.m. when it takes No. 8/8 Ohio State in the semifinals of the Gulf Coast Showcase. "We just kept fighting at the end of the game," head coach Quentin Hillsman stated. "Games are going to be like that, unfortunately. Fortunately, most of them we win."
Behind a spectacular second-quarter performance, the Orange led George Washington (3-2) by 17 points at halftime. The Colonials clawed back into the game, making it a one-possession game with less than a minute to play.
George Washington junior forward Kelli Prange attempted a 3-point field goal with two seconds remaining for the win, but was long. Colonials senior forward Caira Washington collected the rebound and attempted to tie it up, but also was denied.
Senior guard Alexis Peterson scored a team-high 27 points and dished out a team-best seven assists. The Columbus, Ohio native made 11 free throws on the night, as well.
Redshirt senior guard Brittney Sykes tallied 21 points against George Washington. It marked Sykes' second-straight 20-point contest. The Newark, N.J. product scored 21 points at Drexel on Nov. 21.
Freshman guard Desiree Elmore had the best outing of her young collegiate career. Elmore posted eight points, two rebounds, and two steals against the Colonials.
