Syracuse Loses to Ohio State, Plays DePaul on Sunday

No. 11/18 Syracuse suffers 77-72 loss to No. 8/8 Ohio State
ESTERO, Fla. – The No. 11/18 Syracuse women's basketball team rallied from 15 points down, but ultimately fell short against No. 8/8 Ohio State, 77-72, on Saturday night.
Syracuse (4-2) will play its final game at the Gulf Coast Showcase on Sunday against No. 18/17 DePaul. Tipoff is set for 5 p.m. at Germain Arena in Estero, Fla. "Our kids played tough," head coach Quentin Hillsman stated. "They played at a high level. That's how we have to play in these games. We have got to come out, play hard, compete, and do the things we can do to win the basketball game."
Down 49-34 with 8:50 remaining in the third quarter, the Orange went on 24-9 run to knot the score with 1:52 left in the frame. Two-time USBWA All-America First Team selection Kelsey Mitchell knocked down two free throws to give the Buckeyes (5-1) a two-point advantage headed into the final 10 minutes of play.
Senior guard Alexis Peterson knocked down a deep jumper and redshirt senior guard Brittney Sykes made an impressive finish at the basket to put Syracuse up 62-60 with 7:37 remaining in regulation. Ohio State responded with nine-straight points to go up seven with 3:42 left in the game.
Behind eight points from Peterson and a lay-up from Sykes, the Orange tied it up, 72-72, with 40 seconds to play. The Buckeyes pulled ahead on their next possession on two free throws from Mitchell. Syracuse had two chances to tie the game in the final eight seconds, but was denied.
Peterson paced the team in scoring with a season-high 29 points on the night. Sykes recorded 16 points, 11 rebounds, and seven assists against Ohio State. Freshman guard Gabby Cooper knocked down four 3-point field goals en route to a 12-point performance.
