Eight players score in double digits
SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Eight players scored in double digits and the Orange (7-4) defeated Eastern Michigan (6-5), 105-57, on Monday night at the Carrier Dome. The game marks the second time that the Orange have surpassed the century mark in scoring this season.
Freshman Tyus Battle led the team in scoring for the first time in his career, tallying 18 points off the bench. Andrew White III scored in double digits for his 11th-straight game with 14 points, while John Gillon also added 14. Tyler Lydon and DaJuan Coleman each had 12.
Taurean Thompson added 11 points off the bench, while Frank Howard and Tyler Roberson had 10 each. Roberson had eight boards and Thompson matched his career-high with seven.Â
Syracuse tallied 34 assists on 37 baskets. The assist total was the club's highest since producing 34 against Morgan State on Dec. 10, 2010.Â
Howard had a squad-best 11 assists and posted his third double-double of the campaign. Gillon followed with nine and Thompson had a career-high five assists.
The Orange unit assisted on the team's first 23 baskets in the game, a stretch that carried over into the second half.
The Orange jumped on the Eagles quickly, racing to a 17-4 lead in the first 7:11 of play. The lead swelled to 28 by halftime, 52-24. The point outburst represented the best first-half effort of the season for Syracuse. At the intermission, Lydon had 12 points and Battle had 10, and six different Syracuse performers had connected on 3-point attempts.
Syracuse cemented yet another long run, this time 13-4, to start the second-half action. Gillon tallied eight of those points from a pair of 3-pointers and a layup under pressure. The Orange advantage eventually reached 48 and Syracuse emerged with a 105-57 victory.
Syracuse connected on 37-of-63 (.587), including 15-of-28 (.536) on 3-point attempts.Â
The Orange defense was effective as well. Eastern Michigan entered the game averaging close to 85 points per game. Syracuse limited the Eagles to 23-of-66 (.348) from the field, including a 5-of-26 (.192) effort on 3-point attempts. Syracuse forced 20 Eastern Michigan turnovers. Gillon had a career-high five steals.
Syracuse faces a quick turnaround, as the Orange return to the Carrier Dome on Wednesday, Dec. 21 to host former BIG EAST Conference foe St. John's. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m.
