White III marks eighth-straight double-digit game
NEW YORK CITY – DaJuan Coleman tallied his fifth-career double-double with a career-high 16 rebounds and 10 points, but Syracuse (5-3) was defeated by rival Connecticut (4-4), 52-50, on Monday night at Madison Square Garden in New York City.
Graduate transfer Andrew White III led the team in scoring with 14 points on the night, marking his eighth-straight outing in double-digits.
The pair of Tyus Battle and Tyler Lydon added nine and seven points, respectively, while Lydon finished second on the team in boards with nine.
In his second-career start in the Orange uniform, Battle sank a three-point basket to begin an 8-0 'Cuse run. Battle led Syracuse in scoring in the first half with six points.
The action between the rivals was back-and-forth through the entire 20 minutes of play, as the clubs tied the game four times. The Huskies notched back-to-back 3-pointers to grab a lead, but a last-second jumper from White III tied the game again, this time at 19 with 2:35 to play.
Looking like the teams were going to head to the locker room tied at 21, Coleman pushed through traffic to put in a layup with seconds left to take the lead, 23-21, before halftime.
The Orange held the Huskies to just 21 points in the first half, the lowest of any Syracuse opponent this season.
White III sank a 3-pointer to start the second, but the game was kept close as the play was matched by a Huskies triple basket.
Battle followed up the close action with a three-pointer of his own, which was paired with a second-chance layup from Coleman to begin the momentum for a 14-5 run. The stride established a 37-26 Syracuse lead with 13:11 on the clock, marking the largest Orange lead of the game.
UConn battled back with a 20-7 run of its own to gain a two-point lead, 46-44, over the Orange with 5:49 to play.
Intense action plagued the final five minutes of play in New York City, as the Huskies were able to outlast Syracuse with a pair of game-ending free throws to come out on top, 52-50, in the rivalry matchup.
