SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Syracuse women's hockey team (5-7-4, 4-2-2 CHA) will take on No. 4 Clarkson (14-3-3, 9-0-1 ECAC) in a home-and-home series this weekend to close out the 2016 portion of its schedule.
Â
The two teams will play on Friday, Dec. 9 in Syracuse at Tennity Ice Pavilion. Admission is free and puck drop is scheduled for 7 p.m. On Saturday, Dec. 10, the Orange and Golden Knights will face off in Potsdam, N.Y. for a Clarkson home game. The game is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m.
Â
The Orange are coming off a College Hockey America weekend series with Rochester Institute of Technology. Syracuse took three of four points in the series with a tie on Friday and a 3-0 win on Saturday, moving them up to second place in CHA standings.
Â
Five Orange players scored in the series. Allie Munroe and Dakota Derrer each scored their first goals of the season against the Tigers, while Kelli Rowswell, Alysha Burriss and Stephanie Grossi each added to their season totals. Burriss and Grossi lead the team with 11 points each this season.
Â
On Saturday, sophomore goaltender Maddi Welch got the starting nod in net and recorded her first shutout of the season, earning CHA Goalie of the Week honors for her performance.
Â
Clarkson is the top team in the ECAC with an undefeated 9-0-1 record in league play. The Golden Knights only losses this season have come against No. 1 Wisconsin and No. 4 St. Lawrence. Clarkson is led in scoring by Cayley Mercer who has 26 points on the season, the fourth highest mark in the country. The Golden Knights will be riding a 14-game unbeaten streak coming into Friday's game.
Â
Syracuse and Clarkson have met 12 times in series history, playing twice in each of the past six season. Clarkson leads the series 11-1-0 all-time. The Golden Knights won both matchups last season, 3-1 and 5-1.
Â
Clarkson will be the highest ranked team Syracuse has faced this season. The Orange played Colgate who was ranked No. 5 at the time earlier in the season, recording a tie and a loss in the series. 'Cuse has also faced North Dakota two weeks ago who has ranked seventh at the time. The Orange won, 3-0, in the first game and lost the second.
