Syracuse defeats Virginia, 91-57, on the road
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Behind a first half for the ages from senior guard Brianna Butler, the No. 22 Syracuse University women's basketball team cruised to a 91-57 victory at Virginia on Thursday night. Butler was a perfect 6-for-6 from 3-point field goal range in the opening 20 minutes at John Paul Jones Arena.
Â
"She did a tremendous job," head coach Quentin Hillsman said. "She got us going tonight. You have to give her a lot of credit. She is really aggressive. She played tough and got us off to a tremendous start."
Â
The King of Prussia, Pa. product scored all of her team-high 23 points in the first half to lead Syracuse (19-6, 9-3) to a 57-30 advantage at the half at Virginia (13-12, 3-8). It marked the most points scored by the Orange in an opening half since the team notched a program-record 64 points against Maryland Eastern Shore on Nov. 20, 2013.
Â
Syracuse never looked back, coasting to a 34-point victory on the road. The Orange was 32-for-61 from the field, making 52.5 percent of its field goal attempts. It marked the club's best field goal percentage in a single game during the 2015-16 season.
Â
Four players scored in double-figures for Syracuse in its 12th conference game of the year. The Orange own a 7-0 overall record when at least four players score at least 10 points.
Â
Redshirt junior guard Brittney Sykes had 17 points, one shy of her season-high. Junior center Briana Day had 15 points and 10 boards, good enough for her fifth double-double of the season. Junior guard Alexis Peterson added 11 points, as well.
Â
Syracuse will be on the road for its second straight contest when it takes on NC State on Sunday afternoon. Tipoff is set for 2 p.m. in Raleigh, N.C.
