Syracuse wins eighth straight contest
PITTSBURGH – The No. 23/18 Syracuse University women's basketball team defeated Pittsburgh, 70-56, on the road on Sunday afternoon at the Petersen Events Center. With the win, Syracuse has won its past eight games, the fifth-longest active winning streak among Power Five programs.
"It was about getting matched up," head coach Quentin Hillsman said. "In the second half, I thought we got matched up in our pressure a little sooner. That was a key to turn them over more."
Syracuse (22-6, 12-3) trailed Pittsburgh (12-15, 4-10) by six points after the opening quarter. It was all Orange after the first 10 minutes, as the team outscored its opposition, 54-34, over the remainder of regulation.
Syracuse knocked down 29-of-59 shots, 49.2 percent of its field goal attempts. It marked the Orange's third best shooting outing of the 2015-16 season. SU capitalized off the Panthers' 21 turnovers, notching 28 points off their misfortunes, as well.
Senior guard Brianna Butler led the team with 20 points on the day, her fifth 20-point contest of the year. Butler made four 3-point field goals at Pittsburgh, which puts her in 20th place in NCAA Division I history with 342 career 3-pointers.
Redshirt junior guard Brittney Sykes notched 16 points and a team-best five boards. In the past two contests, Sykes has averaged 15.5 points for the Orange. The Newark, N.J. native also moved into 20th place on the Syracuse all-time scoring list with 1,081 career points.
Junior guard Alexis Peterson also had a milestone day. With her third bucket of the game, Peterson became the 26th player in program history to record 1,000 career points. The Columbus, Ohio product finished with 15 points and a team-leading six assists.
