SYRACUSE, N.Y.-Â The Syracuse women's tennis team bounced up 29 spots in the ITA rankings from No. 62 to No. 33 on Tuesday afternoon, marking the highest ranking for the Orange in program history. The highest rank Syracuse ever received before now was No. 34 last year.
Syracuse (7-1, 1-1 ACC) started off the 2016 campaign 7-0 for the first time since 2009 and defeated three ranked opponents that most recently included No. 48 Boston College. The Orange lost their first match on Sunday in Atlantic Coast Conference play to No. 9 Virginia by the final score of 5-2, but battled the Cavaliers all afternoon.
After another stellar weekend, freshman Gabriela Knutson was recently named the ACC Player of the Week with four total wins over the weekend, including two in singles and two in doubles. The freshman is 7-0 on the season and is now ranked No. 115 in singles nationally.
Despite a tough loss to No. 2 Danielle Collins from Virginia, graduate student Anna Shkudun is ranked the No. 43 singles player nationally. Shkudun is 6-2 overall this spring as the number one singles player for Syracuse.Â
Junior Valeria Salazar also moved into the national ITA rankings for singles, ranking as the No. 124 player. Salazar is 5-2 overall and went 1-1 over the weekend, defeating Katya Vasilyev of Boston College 6-1, 6-3 before losing to No. 15 Julia Elbaba 6-3, 6-4 of Virginia. Salazar and Knutson went undefeated in No. 1 doubles play over the weekend to remain a perfect 3-0 on the year.Â
