UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa.- After recording a career-high three assists last night for the Syracuse women's ice hockey team, sophomore Megan Quinn scored the game-winning goal in the Orange's 2-1 win over Penn State on Saturday afternoon at the Pegula Ice Arena.
Quinn's four points helped Syracuse (14-13-3, 10-4-2 CHA) to its first weekend sweep of the season. With the two wins over Penn State (9-16-5, 5-6-5 CHA), the Orange gained six points of separation between second and third place in the College Hockey America standings.
"It was big to get the separation this weekend between us, Robert Morris and Penn State. It helps solidify our chances heading into these next two weekends in terms of getting the potential bye," head coach Paul Flanagan said. "It's tough on the road and I give Penn State a ton of credit with the way the played, but it was good for us to play those close types of games this weekend."
Like last night's game, the Orange scored early to take a 1-0 lead into the first intermission. It took only 56 seconds for sophomore Emily Costales to find the back of the, putting Syracuse up 1-0 early. Syracuse held an 11-2 edge in shots after the first frame, but that did not push Penn State back in the second.
The Nittany Lions eventually notched the game up at one midway through the second on a power-play goal from Laura Bowman. The game would only be tied for a little over two minutes before the Orange struck again.
With the Orange going on a power play of their own, Quinn delivered a strike towards the net, blasting a shot past Hannah Ehresmann to make it 2-1. Despite back-and-forth play from both sides for the remainder of the contest, Syracuse held on for a 2-1 win, tallying four major points over the weekend.
Senior netminder Jenn Gilligan finished with 19 total saves in between the pipes that included 10 coming in the third period. Ehresmann secured 21 saves in the contest, allowing both Orange goals.
Syracuse will return home next weekend when the team hosts third-place Robert Morris for a pair of games at Tennity Ice Pavilion. Saturday's game at 2 p.m. will be Syracuse's "Skate For the Cure" game. There will be a free skate offered to fans after the game.
